2002 MSR Netscan Usenet Treemap by number of Posts
usenet newsgroups

This is a treemap of the Usenet newsgroup discussion community space generated by the Netscan system at Microsoft Research. This map represents a year of message reception by all Usenet newsgroups that were collected by the Netscan service. The area of each box is proportional to the number of messages that newsgroup received. Bigger newsgroups create bigger boxes. Color maps to change from the prior year, green indicating growth and red for decline over the prior time period. The original sized image shows significant detail. The treemap tool is available for free download from the research.microsoft.com web site. It comes with an Excel plug-in that allows users to generate their own treemaps with any data they can get into a spreadsheet (that contains a properly formatted hierarchical data structure). Your mileage may vary. Netscan can be found at netscan.research.microsoft.com.

This is a treemap of the Usenet newsgroup discussion community space generated by the Netscan system at Microsoft Research. This map represents the number of unique authors in each Usenet newsgroup who appeared in the current year. Data on the number of "posters" in each newsgroup was collected and calculated by the Netscan service. The area of each box is proportional to the number of authors that newsgroup attracted in the current year. Newsgroups with bigger poster populations create bigger boxes. Color maps to change from the prior year, green indicating growth and red for decline over the prior time period. The original sized image shows significant detail. The treemap tool is available for free download from the research.microsoft.com web site. Rittner’s Field Guide to Usenet

Rittner’s Field Guide to Usenet

The World Wide Web may be where the current focus is, but Don Rittner shows that for great people-to-people interaction, it’s hard to beat Usenet. Written for the beginner, Rittner’s book is an in-depth look at how Usenet works and how to use it. He focuses on users whose primary access to Internet resources is through an online service–specifically America Online or CompuServe.

Rittner begins with an overview, explaining what Usenet is and the vast range of discussions that can be found there. His examples cover everything from obscure scientific research to discussions about baby strollers for joggers. He shows readers how to find a newsgroup of interest, how to post, and how to create a newsgroup of their own. Rittner gives due balance to the technical and social aspects of Usenet posting, showing how to read and post more efficiently and maintain good relationships with other users.

But despite his enthusiasm for Usenet, Rittner doesn’t pretend that it’s an online Utopia. He’s up front about Usenet users’ being prone to the whole range of human frailties and contributes many satiric observations. As he puts it, “There are 5,000 helpful people for every jerk on Usenet, but that’s still a lot of jerks.” An enclosed CD-ROM offers a free trial membership to CompuServe, and a companion Web site offers updates to the book’s information. – Elizabeth Lewis

Written in Sharpie on a used Deb[bie|orah] Gibson CD, found for sale in a box on the sidewalk. Gibson was stalked in the late 90s by Michael Falkner, who was also known on the ISCABBS as "Starcade." After harassing the singer through email and posting thinly-veiled rape threats on Usenet, Falkner decided to visit Ms. Gibson in New York while she was appearing in Beauty & The Beast at the Palace Theater. Gibson recognized Falkner as he waited outside a stage door for her. She hid inside the theater and called the cops. And Starcade went to jail, but not before making The Daily Show and CNN, of all places.
