Can Usenet downloads be tracked?
Question by swilliamson: Can Usenet downloads be tracked?
We hear about all the lawsuits in the news about people getting sued for downloading music off peer to peer networks but never from usenet.
The RIAA can track the downloading of music from peer to peer networks but can they trace downloads from newsgroups?

Absolutely, Usenet downloads can be tracked, in fact any service on the net which is unencrypted can be tracked. The only reason why we don’t here about Usenet users getting sued is because of the huge percentage of users on P2Ps than on Usenet. As Wikipedia says, “Some have noted that this seems a monstrously inefficient protocol in the era of abundant high-speed network access. Usenet was designed for a time when networks were much slower, and not always available. Many sites on the original Usenet network would connect only once or twice a day to batch-transfer messages in and out”. This is the main reason for lesser usage of this service. An article on CNet also hints on tracking the usenet activity : http://news.com.com/5208-1032-0.html?forumID=1&threadID=9012&messageID=64538&start=-168
