Usenet is newsgroups. Mostly for open discussion.

There are newsgroups for games, and for art, and for dirty pictures, and for every movie you have ever liked and every author and every band and every hobby and on and on and on

You do not have to pay to use usenet. Check with your internet provider. Most of them have some sort of service for it that you might already have access to.

Or you can use groups.google.com

Why do I always get an .exe when I try to download video from usenet ?

Question by Hermann Jonsson: Why do I always get an .exe when I try to download video from usenet ?
I have tried to download videos from usenet and alwas get a exe file hidden in a rar file, is this a virus and if so is usenet useless because of viruses?

A virus is a computer program that infects your computer and cause it to act sick. Most .exe are not viruses but trojans. Trojans are programs that create “back doors” so that bad people can use your computer for everything from stealing your identity and personal info like banks to using it as a zombie computer in attacking other computer systems. Downloading anything from anywhere, especially places like usenet, is useless until you learn how to judge what files are bad and what files are good. However even at that point it is like playing Russian roulette.

Now you should go and reformat your computer and never do that again.

Whats wrong with usenet nowadays? Why does my symantec antivirus see trojan horses when I download files?

Question by smoothie pro: Whats wrong with usenet nowadays? Why does my symantec antivirus see trojan horses when I download files?
I use giganews.com for usenet file downloads especially progs and for rars. I use symantec endpoint protection. Is the trojan horse real or AV is making a false alarm?

For the most part, it is usually a false alarm. HOWEVER, I would be especially careful when downloading any RAR files or Keygens. Keep track of what you download, and if your system starts acting up, IMMEDIATELY delete the recent “iffy” files you’ve downloaded and run spybot.
