Pseudonymous remailer: Anonymous Remailer, Internet, Pseudonym, Usenet, Email, Server (computing), Pretty Good Privacy
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A pseudonymous remailer or nym server, as opposed to an anonymous remailer, is an Internet software program designed to allow people to write pseudonymous messages on Usenet newsgroups and send pseudonymous email. Unlike purely anonymous remailers, it assigns its users a user name, and it keeps a database of instructions on how to return messages to the real user. These instructions usually involve the anonymous remailer network itself, thus protecting the true identity of the user. Primordial pseudonymous remailers once recorded enough information to trace the identity of the real user, making it possible for someone to obtain the identity of the real user through legal or illegal means. This form of pseudonymous remailer is no longer common. David Chaum wrote an article in 1981 that described many of the features present in modern pseudonymous remailers. The Penet remailer, which lasted from 1993 to 1996, was a popular pseudonymous remailer.

Excerpt: Among the operators and users of commercial Usenet news servers, common concerns are the continually increasing storage and network capacity requirements and their effects. Completion (the ability of a server to successfully receive all traffic), retention (the amount of time articles are made available to readers) and overall system performance are the topics of frequent discussion. With the increasing demands, it is common for the transit and reader server roles to be subdivided further into numbering, storage and front end systems. These server farms are continually monitored by both insiders and outsiders, and measurements of these characteristics are often used by consumers when choosing a commercial news service. End users often use the term “posting” to refer to a single message or file posted to Usenet. For articles containing plain text, this is synonymous with an article. For binary content such as pictures and files, it is often necessary to split the content among multiple articles. Typically through the use of numbered Subject: headers, the multiple-article postings are automatically reassembled into a single unit by the newsreader. Most servers do not distinguish between single and multiple-part postings, dealing only at the level of the individual component articles. Each news article contains a complete set of header lines, but in common use the term “headers” is also used when referring to the News Overview database. The overview is a list of the most frequently used headers, and additional information such as article sizes, typically retrieved by the client software using the NNTP XOVER command. Overviews make reading a newsgroup faster for both the client and server by eliminating the need to open each ind… More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1566407

Comparing Usenet to Torrents
Comparing Usenet to Torrents
Usenet is a web based service that is quite old, genuine and has several advantages over Torrents. Both Usenet and Torrents are helpful in downloading files on to your computer which are present on their servers. Usenet has several benefits and we will review a few of them.
Benefits of Usenet over Torrents
Firstly you are not depending on a distributed set of peers; all parts of the file are present in the Usenet server just waiting to be downloaded. The speed is quite high and only depends on the speed of your internet connection. Secondly, it is interesting to note that you can simultaneously download multiple files. This way you save a lot of time as compared to Torrents of any other P2P service.
Since these services use standard HTTP protocols, they are more secure and you can use the same security you use while surfing like firewall, anti virus and anti-spy software. You will be able to see automatic thumbnail previews thus being able to know at a glance the quality of the file. When using Torrent or other P2P services you may have to split up the files and then join them together after downloading. But in the case of Usenet, the server automatically does this for you making your work easier.
The reason you can trust Usenet is that the quality of service is excellent and the web interface is so good that you just need Internet Explore or any standard browser to access it.
Why people prefer Usenet?
People use Usenet for several reasons like taking part in text based discussions on millions of topics, some of which you may have never even imagined or you may use a subscription based system to download movies, pictures, MP3, music and even software. The amount of data stored is also mind boggling and you can find all the information you require.
Usenet services offer 256 bit SSL encryption ensuring that speed and security go hand in hand. You may have to pay a nominal subscription fee but high quality service never comes free. Usenet is surely more beneficial than torrents in terms of speed, security and vast amount of data available.

Microsoft Research C#UNG Image of Usenet Newsgroup Reply Social Network
Microsoft Research C#UNG Image of Usenet Newsgroup Reply Social Network

[UPDATE: now see NodeXL: www.codeplex.com/nodexl for more recent versions]
This is a directed graph visualization based on data collected from the Netscan project at Microsoft research from Usenet newsgroup message traffic. In this image the dots are "nodes" representing authors or "posters" in a newsgroup about server operating systems for computers. The dots are connected by lines or "edges" representing the relationship "replied to".
The image highlights the variation in roles and social structure in newsgroups and other online discussion communities.
The C#UNG software that generated the image is freely available from research.microsoft.com. It comes with an Excel plug-in that allows users to generate their own network visualizations with any data they can get into a spreadsheet (that contains a properly formatted directed graph data structure). Your mileage may vary. Netscan can be found at netscan.research.microsoft.com.
