HDX – DREADFUL Support and Customer Policies,
This is a comment on HDX’s latest media box, the HDX-BD1 and the total disdain that the company shows for their users (the box in its present form with firmware 4.9 is simply not usable).
I purchased an HDX-BD1 media player and am sorry that I did. Although the hardware itself shows great promise (a very cool processor, nice packaging), I was surprised by the company’s disdain for the user. Candidly, if I had known the degree of problems with the management (the simultaneously amateur yet disdainful support the company exhibits) I could have avoided much distress and not purchased the product. Having just a bit of experience now with HDX, I would NEVER purchase anything made by these people again.
I posted my disappointment in pretty polite and understated terms on their community forum site and found that my posting was quickly deleted (a violation of their site rules, they said). I was prompting them to be more open about the firmware progress and said that the product was more alpha than beta (certainly not ready). Very basic, essential low level functions simply didn’t work. Since my purchase, HDX keeps rolling back the date of their release of the next firmware, leaving purchasers hanging in stasis. I asked in my note that they keep us better informed of their firmware progress, stating again that I had purchased something clearly not ready for prime time.
Specifically that they clearly don’t want negative issues posted. I’ve never had my postings deleted on any site previous to this experience with HDX. I’m not naïve about how business’ need to run but I was truly surprised by their management’s heavy handed behavior which I see as highly counter-productive. That said, not only did my posting get deleted but private messages that I sent to other users were read by management and flagged similarly, as a violation. Dealing with technical and customer relations issues by censoring postings is not an impressive way to run a business.
If you look at the web site for “networkedmediatank” under “Other NMT Mediaplayers”, you’ll get a taste of what’s going on with the company.
Additionally, HDX’s own community forums have enough up there to raise the red flag…
“I have a HDX-1000 and while it’s a great machine, HDX are sooooo slowwww at bring updates. I think this is one of the many reasons why I didn’t buy BD-1. I bought a Popcorn Hour C-200 instead and very happy. I will never buy a HDX again. sorry alex , but I’ve been burned way too many times buy your machines.”
“I had been quite enthusiastic and unfortunately already purchased two BD-1 in January – which are still of no use at all due to the network issues. However, I had been planning to get some additional units but actually the FW thing is preventing me from doing it.”
See for yourself (in the items that they have not deleted) how they respond. This is one company whose products I would avoid. There are alternatives to the HDX from companies like the Popcorn, AC Ryan and Dune. Some of them (like the Popcorn) have a much larger user base and clearly a better attitude toward their customers.

|Terrible company and even worse support: STAY AWAY,
The amount of bad press and poor user ratings is increasing of late for this terrible company. From units breaking w/in a few months to unethical RMA support to nonexistent firmware support and unmet spec promises this Chinese based company is creating quite an infamous name for itself. And now with the release of the new BD1 the situation for HDX is even worse! The BD1 cannot fulfill the basic specs of connecting to a secure NAS-based network, has stuttering playback on bluray iso files and in fact stutters on any file type with high bitrate. The gigabit speed is not enabled despite the specs claiming to. The rewind function does not work. There is not auto frame rate. The UI is worse than a joke. It is NOT a media tank (NMT) unlike the HDX 1000 which only works in part because the UI is taken care of by a relatively more reputable firm. So STAY AWAY from ALL HDX products and avoid this unethical company like the swine flu!
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

|HD Movies look better on a big screen!,
It’s about time to have this product make its way to Amazon.com. If you have not heard about the HDX 1000 yet, it is a high definition H.264 Media player. It can playback the movies saved in your computer, on an external USB HDD, or on a USB drive. After acquiring the dts license, the HDX 1000 can now match the performance of the more popular NMT player, Popcornhour A-110.
The most significant Pros and Cons are listed below:
Pros:
* Wide media format support. Examples are, mkv, mpeg, avi, mov, mp3, jpg, wmv and more…
* High definition media playback ready.
* Dedicated CPU power enables a smooth media playback experience.
* Quiet and with a decent look. No more noisy XBOX or ugly HTPC in the living room.
* This machine can perform Bittorrent downloading; leave your PC to rest at night.
Cons:
* No clear user instruction manual.
* The default user file navigation interface is text-based. It can do the job, but can definitely use a graphical interface to make the file selection more intuitional. (There is a 3rd party movie jukebox software plug-in to enable the graphical interface. However, it is not included in the retail box.)
* The HDX 1000 is clearly a gadget on the technical leading edge. It can perform the function it is designed to do very well. But, if you are using the machine to perform certain tasks, such as playing back .rm format media file, that the designer doesn’t expect you to do, you are running the risk of freezing the operation.
