How to Create a NAS with Ubuntu Server

How to build a NAS with Ubuntu Server. In this tutorial I show you how to setup a Network Attached Storage (NAS) system with Ubuntu Server. I go through how to create a RAID, setup Samba / SMB Shares, and install Usenet downloaders SABNZBD+, SickBeard, and CouchPotato Majority of configuration with the NAS can be done via Web Browser using Webmin, so you can access it with either Computer, Laptop, or Smartphone, and with any OS: Linux, Android, iPhone, Mac, or Windows. No files stay saved on USB between reboots. Sure you can use an SSD instead.
I can’t advise on compatibility of RAID Cards, its not something I’ve ever used.

I have a question if you install via usb would you not lose your settings if your system has to reboot or loses power? Also could I not install this on a ssd and have my raid on a raid card so I could have this installed in my computer?

Ugh I hate webmin so much. It would take a lot of work, but would be nice to do a full guide without webmin.

I was plannig on setting up an open media vault + various win7 virtual machines using virtualbox.
But after watching this Im wondering if unbuntu as file server like this, and virtualbox would be a better alternative.
    What is your recommendation?
Need file server with raid6, running sqeezebox server and various virtual win7 developer and sql server machines.

Hi, great video. Just a question though. After setting the IP as static I can no longer get outside the network, cannot ping (either by domain or by IP) anywhere. Yet i can log in to the machine remotely. So I guess something is wrong in /etc/network/interfaces any ideas how i would check what values i should have for my network, netmask broadcast, gateway et al?

    Thanks again

Giving Ubuntu Server a try because freenas is a pain. Great Tutorial!!!

I found a small error in your document you posted “sudo apt-get –no-install-recommends install mdadm” should be “sudo apt-get —no-install-recommends install mdadm”

missing one “-” in front of no-install
