Is Usenet.nl safe to use?

Question by ThangQanime: Is Usenet.nl safe to use?
Answer: No it is not!!

We download things from the internet from time to time and though we may pay for the item, we normally try to find free download services. Yeah they might limit you to how much you can download at a time, and have you wait long for the download itself but trust me its WORTH IT. I wanted the online ebook for one of my classes and got tempted one day by promises of faster service by a company named Usenet.nl. It promised a 14 day free trial which i figured was way more than I needed for one download…so i though “eh why not?”. Apparently after the free trial is over they extend your membership without your consent and the only notification you get is an email with the subject “Your usenet.nl contract”. Wow, what a way to grab someones attention to an urgent message.

I was charged $ 142.75 on my account. I asked for a refund and got a message claiming they would service me with one. It appeared all was settled. WRONG! Got another charge of $ 143 on my account putting me at a total of $ 285.75. After scouring the net for contact information and coming up short I stumbled upon another site in which another person claimed to have been ripped off and in his report I found a number.

I called them up and they claim they “werent aware” of the second charge but will do everything they can to provide a full refund. Pshh yeah ok…what a shady business. I hope they can at least hold true to their word.

I know this isnt a question, this is more to service any unsure person thinking of trying them and decides to type this question into google. It doesnt appear that they are REALLY in the business of outright stealing money, moreso than the fact that they are just stupid in the handling of customers. However I wouldn’t trust my money in the hands of an incompetent person anymore than I would a crook. Just as detrimental if left unchecked.

I doubt many will even respond to this but I am sure at least one person out there found this helpful, so I will update you all on whether I received my FULL refund and the time it took etc.

Never again…
*To the idiot below me*
FYI I did not try to “steal” anything. Usenet is a free DOWNLOADING SOFTWARE DURING ITS TRIAL PERIOD. You still pay for the service annually once they force their contract on you, tard. I was going to pay for the ebook I was searching for online and then use their downloader during the trial period to obtain it. What a paltry attempt at painting ME out to be the crook. You claim that usenet is a free trustable service which predates the modern internet and then contradict yourself and call them crooks. What an ass.

Oh and also I see you’re completely ignorant as to the meaning of the quote you took from me. I wasn’t implying that people steal content from the internet (which millions actually do, 5 min of research on the net would’ve told you that, moron) I was saying that most people do not pay for the DOWNLOAD service itself. It is completely legal to use a free downloader by legitimate providers such as Megaupload, esnips, etc… especially seeing as they
(cont.) are free to encourage you to upgrade to a premium trial. Next time, try not to assume so much, im sure for your small brain it adds to more of a headache to the self induced one you get from banging it against your keyboard to type your insipid comments. Have a nice one, you jackass.

Thanks.

I was about to sign up for Usenet.nl but what really got me suspicious of the safety of it’s site was it’s parading of it’s own secure network

It specifically mentions it’s 128bit encrypted…(whatever it is that is encrypted) and has pictures of large padlocks all over the place.

It kept saying it’s secure and free. But even though the message they are trying to get across to the user is the ‘legit security and freeness’, they fail to present it realistically. Only a con site would have such a state like that.

But I was still about to go download some free software untill I was asked for an account.

That’s just TOO much information they’re asking for a ‘free’ site.

But lastly, what REALLY was the deal breaker for me to discern the site’s fraudulence was because I was originally looking for a crack (executable file allowing the use of a program without the necessity of other things such as disks). You’ll never have to pay for these things. It’s a scam like CheatHappens.com

Thanks for letting us know about this.
