I have a psychology B.A. and an advertising and marketing A.A.S. I don’t know if political science would have helped, but perhaps marketing is suitable for campaigning.

As someone who has ran for senate and am about to again. my cousin is a senator. the best advise is to get your face out there as much as possible, it is not who you know either,it is who get there face out there the most knocks on enough doors,add on tv, news coverage, and say what people want to here.So when they go to the polls you are who is on their mind. Have fund raisers.
