usenet or otherwise known as a newsgroup have a similar function than forums but are much older.

There are several ways you can utilize a usenet. You can either use google groups (http://groups.google.com/ ) which in reality is just an interface for usenet. Or you could use a newsgroup reader. Some email clients such as outlook express have this functionality setup already.

Please note however though you need an account with a usenet provider when using a news reader (or email client) which your ISP maybe able to provide. Otherwise you will need to do a search for some good ones.
